Youth Group Update - 11.13.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

Here is your youth group update for this week.

This Week:

There is no youth group following church this Sunday as we will celebrating Consecration Sunday with the Brunch starting right after Worship.  However, please have your children present to witness this milestone in our common life.

Roles in Worship:

Lily - Assurance and Law.  Be here early for me to give you the heads up on this.

Josh, Sean - Greeters

Cole - Acolyte

Bill, Brandon - Collection

The Play:

Here are the items that we are working on for this coming week with the play:

Highlight all lines

Practice at home with someone

Bring a pencil and scripts to rehearsal

Look over the italics in the script to see your personal movements

Work on your own costume

We will have this Sunday and next Sunday with the scripts at rehearsal.  On November 30, you will no longer be able to use your script for rehearsal.  Please have lines memorized by then.

Forward Motion:

Synod-Wide Youth Lock-In at First Reformed Church of Albany - January 30 and 31.  Please put this on the calendar to attend.  It will be a great event with some other good kids and great adult leaders.  We will have music, games, food, a special guest speaker, spiritual workshops, worship, and a service project or two to choose from.

Also, have your kids be thinking about two things regarding mission.  First, what would they like to do with the money that they earned from the Spaghetti Supper?  Second, why do we as a group of Christians do this kind of thing?  Why would we use/donate money for a good cause?  Is this required of us or something we do freely?

Thanks!  Your child's participation in this community is extremely meaningful and formative for who they are in this world and in their relationship with the Triune God.  Keep bring them to church!

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update 10.9.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

Here is your youth group update for this week.

This Sunday:

This week, I will not be at church so we won't have youth participation during the service.  It would just be too much to have other folks instructing the kids.  However, we will have youth group dung discovery time, with the mentors leading.  So, please have them here for both Worship and Disoery Time.

Next Week:

Next Week will be similar a I will be on my way to seminary in Holland, MI.

Forward Motion:

The Turkey Supper is coming up on Saturday Octoer 18.  I am hopeful that all of our youth will be able to participate in some way in this event.  If they haven't signed up yet in Poff Hall, please have them do that this Sunday.  They will be under the leadership of Linda Kapusta in the dining room.  A note about tips:  Linda will establish a tip jar for the youth group.  All tips are to be placed in that jar and not taken home by individuals.  The proceeds from the tips will go to a special youth fellowship event of their choosing.

The Spaghetti Supper is just a few short weeks after the Turkey Supper. This is the start of our mission projects for this year as we will raise money by putting on the dinner.  Jim Holbrook and Sue Kapusta will be in touch with me with more details as we get closer to the event.  For not, just have it on your calendar.   Its November 4.

The Christmas Play will be put on by the Youth Group this year on December 21.  Your play direction staff this year will be Miguel Arocho with assistance from Brian Hodgkins, Justin Rynolds, and Becky White.  Rehearsals for this will begin on Sunday, October 26 starting at 5:30 and concluding at 8:00.  Dinner will be provided for all participants.

I think that's all for now.  I apologize for the upcoming spottiness in my schedule.  Its just the way things ended up this year with school being in October.

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update 9.25.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks

Here is your update for this week.

This Week:

We will have our regular youth group meeting on Sunday during Discovery Time.  However, there will be one difference.  Once a month, when Pastor Bill is on his week off, the Youth Group will accompany me to Sermon Talk-Back.  I think our kids are old enough to get something out of this and I think its important for them to see our community engaging their faith development in this way.  So, I will be there leading Sermon Talk-Back with our youth and our youth mentors.  So, remind your kids to pat attention to that Sermon on Sunday.

Worship Participants:

Greeters/Collection - Bill and Brandon

Acolyte - Jack

Call To Worship - A'Shawna

Prayer of Confession Scripture - Molly

Ushers/Bell Ringers - Josh and Sean can ring the bell and help seat folks

Next Week:

Our normal schedule will resume next week.

Forward Motion:

Your kids should sign up to help with the Turkey Supper on Saturday, October 18.

Be sure you have Tuesday, November 4 on your calendar as well so they can participate in the Election Day Spaghetti Supper.

Thanks,

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update - 9.11.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

I am excited to bring you our first youth group update of the year.  As you know some things have changed since last year with the way that we will do Christian Education and Youth Group. Our new Sunday Morning Schedule will be an opportunity for all of us to gather on Sunday Morning for Worship and Fellowship and Spiritual Growth, our youth included.

Next Meeting

The youth group program starts on Sunday September 21 at 11:15, right after church.  We will meet every week after church and this will be our main mode of Youth Group meetings.  We will also do some events and activities outside of this time, but the bulk of our gatherings will be in this time after church.

Mentors Needed

I will be looking for some adult mentors to be a part of our youth group program for this coming church year.  The idea here is that it has been shown that youth who have positive and meaningful relationships with adults beyond their parents are more likely to carry their faith into adulthood.  So, to create this group of super-important individuals, I want to start with youth group parents since your are well known to most of our kids.  I will also be reaching out personally to other folks in the congregation, but I wanted you all to have the first opportunity to participate.  All you would have to do is to be with us on Sunday mornings during discovery time from 11:15 - 12:00.  You would also be invited and encouraged to participate in all of the youth group activities outside of this time.  So, if you are interested, please let me know.

Worship Participation

One of the elements of our new approach to Sunday mornings is to make worship more meaningful for our youth group aged kids and to encourage more attendance from them at church.  There are two ways for us to do this.  One is obvious but difficult: Its for me to encourage you to bring them to church.  So, I'll just go ahead and say it then...  :)   We at WGRC can't minister to them if they aren't with us and we can't answer their questions about Christ, the church, and what it means to have faith if they aren't here to formulate those questions.  I don't have a teenage child yet, so I can't say for sure, but I imagine that it is hard to fight it when they say they don't want to come to church.  So, I'm including a link here that might help you gain the courage to fight that fight and win that battle.  Click here for a great article.

We understand that getting them here isn't always easy and we wouldn't want you to fight to get them here and then for us to have nothing for them.  So, the second method might help in encouraging them to be with us.  We have decided that perhaps a more participatory role in worship, might help to encourage them to come and also to give their being here more meaning for them.  If they have something to do in worship, they won't end up just sitting in the pews and listening to boring old Jordan.  So, I'd like to involve our kids in worship on a regular basis.  I'd ask that as parents, if you would ask your kids which parts of the service they might feel comfortable with and then next week, we can talk more about formulating an approach to this.

In Conclusion

Part of my goal in my position here at WGRC, is to work alongside you as the parent to help your child develop a faith that will last into adulthood.  We need to partner together to make this work.  Studies have shown that children, even with all the outside influences of our modern culture, still are impacted most by their parents.  In other words, your children will learn their faith from you more than they will from me.  I can help in this process and I very much feel called to do so, but it all starts with you as mom and dad.  I am hopeful, and would even go so far as to say convinced, that the Spirit has good things in store for our youth and families this year at WGRC and I am looking forward to working alongside you to share the good news of Christ Jesus with your children.

I'll be in touch next week to further discuss details for our kickoff Sunday.

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update - 6.12.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

Here is your penultimate weekly youth group update for this week:

This Weekend:

There is no youth group this Sunday due to Father's Day.

Next Weekend:

We will celebrate the year of youth ministry in our church with Moving Up Sunday.  This is a celebration not only of our youth group kids and what they have done this year, but also our younger kids in nursery school and our older "kids" in the God Squad.  Please plan on being with us for this as we cap off another year of youth ministry before our summer break.

That's all for now.

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update - 6.5.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

Here is your Youth Group update for this week:

This Sunday:

We will meet at the church for Youth Sunday at 9:00 AM.  Please have the kids here right on time so that we have time to work through the entire service and get everyone feeling good and comfortable for the service.  Youth Sunday should be relaxed and fun and good preparation can allow us to do that.

There will be no Youth Group meeting on Sunday night as we are already working hard for Sunday morning and I also have a consistory meeting.

Next Weekend:

On Saturday, your kids have been requested to be helpers for the auction.  If they are available to help out, they should be there at 5:30.  See my previous email or get in touch with Katie Donnan for more details on that.

On Sunday, as always, they should come to church in the morning.  :)  Its just good to have them here with us.  Then in the evening we will celebrate with our final Youth Group meeting of the year at 6:00.  We will have a cookout around the fire pit.  I'll let you know next week what your kids can bring to help out with that.

Moving Up Sunday:

Moving Up Sunday is going to be June 22.  That will be the day that all of our kids are honored for their growth as young followers of Christ.  So, if you can have them here with us, as always, thats a great thing!  I'll have a special gift and note for each one of them and they will all be honored during worship.

Vacation Bible School:

As always, we'd love to have your kids help us out with Vacation Bible School this summer.  The dates are July 27 - July 31.  Its an evening one again, so please have them ready to go for that if they are willing to volunteer to be youth leaders for that.

I think that's if for now.  Just check your emails again for the bulletin for Sunday, so that your kids can get up to speed if they weren't with us over the weekend.

Thanks!

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update - 5.29.14

by Jordan White

This Week:

We will gather at the church on Saturday, May 31 at 12:00.  Lunch will be provided and then we'll get to work on finishing up our other two mission projects, preparing goodies for our bake sale at the Concert on Sunday June 1, and doing more work in preparation for Youth Sunday the next week.  After we finish up our work, we'll head out and make our deliveries.  God Squad folks will be assisting with transportation that day.  When we return from our deliveries, we'll celebrate our mission work and our year together with a cookout around the campfire.  You can plan to pick up your kids around 6:00.

On Sunday, for those kids who play in the ensemble, we will have a very short rehearsal right after worship, so have them here with their instruments.  Then the entire Youth Group will gather at the church at 6:30 to prepare for selling the baked goods during intermission of the concert.

Remaining Dates For This Year:

Sunday June 8 - Youth Sunday - Meeting after church for Acolyte training for next year.  No Youth Group That Night.

Sunday June 15 - Final Youth Group Meeting of the Year - 6:00-7:30 PM

Sunday June 22 - Moving Up Sunday - This is a change from the previous schedule.

That should do it for the remainder of our Youth Group Season.  After June 22, our next event will be a late-summer meeting for the parents to prepare for our new schedule next year.  This will likely look a little different than this year as our Christian Education Committee is working on a potential change in the way that we integrate our youth program with the rest of our church life.

Thanks!

Jordan

Hey folks,

Here is your update for this week.

This Week:

We will once again have all the instrumental kids in on Sunday after church to work on our Easter Joint Ensemble Piece.  This will likely be our only chance to run through it with the band, so please remind them to bring their instruments home with them.

Sunday night, we will have our regular youth group meeting starting at 6:00 and running until 7:30.  However, immediately following our youth group meeting, we will be having our first Holy Week Vigil right at 7:30.  Please plan on staying for this so your kids can see what these vigils are all about.  For our church, its a chance to recognize the week ahead as a special kind of week where the center of our faith lies.

Next Week:

Next week there will be no youth group as it is Easter Sunday.

Dates Ahead:

The date for Youth Sunday has been changed due to a couple of other things changing schedule.  Youth Sunday is now June 8.

Here is your update for this week.

This Week:

This Friday night we have the Lock-In.  We will begin at 6 on Friday night.  The kids should bring all the sleeping gear they and plenty of soft stuff to sleep on as we will be camping out on Poff Hall floor.  They can also bring friends if you, as parents, deem them to be responsible and trustworthy.  Our Lock-In will end at 9 am the next morning.  We will be having breakfast around 8:00 and then packing up and cleaning up.  So 9 should be a good pick-up time for you.

There is no Youth Group Meeting on Sunday night as I will be involved with Consistory.  Please remember to check in with our Mission Projects to make sure that your kids are up to date on what they're doing.

Next Week:

We will be back on our regular schedule next week.

Youth Group Update - 3.28.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

Here is your update for this week:

This Sunday:

We will meet at regular time, 6:00-7:30, to check in on mission projects and plan for our lock-in thats coming up on Friday.

Next Week:

The Lock-In will be Friday night, April 4, starting at 6PM.  We will make plans and discuss details at our weekly meeting this week.

There will be a rehearsal for the youth music group after church on Sunday, April 6 for our Easter Sunday Special Music.  If your child plays and instrument, please remind them to bring it home from school and to bring it to church that day.  I will be in my Adult Sunday School Class, but our resident band director, Noel Wing, has agreed to lead the kids through rehearsal.  He was my band director in high school and he's well qualified for the job.

There is no youth group next Sunday night, April 6, since I will be at Consistory.

Upcoming:

Youth Sunday will be May 4.  We will begin preparations for that at the Lock-In or the very next meeting after that.  I will keep the kids up to date on that.

The youth mission project event supporting The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center will take place on Sunday May 18 at 6PM, so please plan to be here for that.  We will be inviting the whole congregation to participate.

Moving Up Sunday will be June 15, so please plan on being with us for that worship service as well.

Camp Fowler is a great opportunity for your kids and a wonderful way to give them a "spiritual home" early in life.  I hope that we can get a good number of our kids.  I have already heard form a couple of you about your plans for this summer, but if you haven't registered your child yet, check out Camp's website, www.campfowler.org, and get them signed up.  Our church provides $100 scholarships per child per week and all you have to do is contact Jen Kenneally and let her know that your child is registered and she'll take care of paying that portion of the fee.

I think that's all for now.  As always, please let me know if your child can't be with us and thank you for keeping them involved in this community.

In Peace,

Jordan

Hey folks,

Here is your Youth Group Update for this week.

This Sunday:

We are meeting this week at our regular time of 6:00-7:30 for fellowship and to check in on our mission projects.  Please have your kids check in with that portion of our website to make sure they're on track.

Next Week:

We will have our regular meeting on Sunday, March 30.

Mission Projects:

To check in on what needs to be done for these projects to move forward, grab your kid and follow this link.

Forward Motion:

Dates that should be on your calendar...

Lock-In - April 4-5

Easter - April 20

Youth Sunday - May 4

Moving Up Sunday - June 15

Encouragement:

Just a note as usual to say thanks so much for the great attendance that we have been having at Youth Group meetings lately.  Last week, we had everyone who is involved in our mission projects, which makes it fun and helps us to move our projects forward.  As always, your kids being present in our community is not only a blessing to them, but to our congregation as well.  We are charged with bringing these kids up in a faith community in a world where that is very difficult.  The more that we can keep them involved in the life of our church(Sunday worship, youth group, church events), the more that they will begin to understand the rhythm of this life that we live together.  Thank you for all you do to keep your kids "in rhythm."

In Peace,
Jordan

Youth Group Update - 3.13.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

Your kids are great!  I just want to say how inspired I am by them and their creativity and sense of caring as they have been at work on their Spring Mission Projects.

Last Week:

We had a great meeting on Sunday night where we selected teams to lead the entire youth group through our Mission Projects.  Our three team leaders, Lily Becker, Josh Holbrook, and Cassidy Arocho have stepped up to see that their teams get everything done and have everything covered.

This Week:

We will meet at our regularly scheduled time on Sunday at 6:00 to check in with our projects and then to do some other fun stuff.  Not sure yet what's on the agenda, but we won't spend the whole time on our projects.

Mission Projects:

Check the Spring Mission Projects page for information on this.  Each of your kids has something to do for these mission projects and all the assignments can be found on this page.  I will say that if your kids have a flyer to do(Lily, A'Shawna, Molly), they need to be emailed to me no later than next Wednesday, March 19.  That is the most pressing thing and everything else can be found on the web page.

Dates:

Youth Group Lock-In - Friday, April 4

Youth Sunday - Sunday, May 4

Youth Acolyte Training - Sunday May 4

That's all for now.  Once again thanks for keeping your kids involved here at church.  Whatever you can do to help them to get into a good healthy rhythm now is so important for not only their future, but for the future of the faith.  Thanks for supporting this ministry.

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update - 3.6.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

This Sunday:

We will have our regular meeting this Sunday at 6:00, ending at 7:30.  This is an important meeting as we will be defining our teams for our 3 mission projects.  I have been doing some work on these projects this week and I have a good deal of information ready to hand over to the kids.  So, I'll need all of us here for this in order to make sure that everyone is involved in the team that want to be on.  When we have the teams selected, we will have each team work towards putting together their individual mission project.  When the project is ready to execute, that team will act as the "leaders" for their given project.

The three projects:

Host a visitor from Albany Medical Center Children's Hospital and Make a Donation.

Volunteer at an Animal Shelter and Make a Donation.

Create Care Packages for our Shut-Ins and Deliver Them.

Please have your kids thinking about which of these they feel most drawn to so that we can move things along successfully on Sunday Night.  And as always, please let me know if your child can't be with us for any reason.

Upcoming Dates to Mark:

Youth Group Lock-In: Friday April 4 at 6:00

Youth Sunday: May 4

All-Youth Acolyte Training: May 4 (After Worship)

Sing Forth The Kingdom: June 1

Moving Up Sunday: June 15

I will keep you up to date as more things are added here, namely our mission projects.

Thanks again for your support of the program and your continued to commitment to work alongside me and the rest of the congregation to care well for these children of God.

In Peace,

Jordan

Youth Group Update - 2.27.14

by Jordan White

Hey folks,

Thank You:

Thanks so much for the great mid-year check-ins.  Its so helpful for me as I attempt to craft a program that works for everyone to have time to talk with you and to get feedback from you and especially the kids.

This Sunday:

There is no Youth Group this Sunday night as I will be working with our Consistory at our monthly meeting.  However, as always, your kids are encouraged to be with us for worship on Sunday morning.  We gather to remember that we are indeed God's children and with communion being this Sunday, what a great opportunity for them to once again be in the presence of God and this community.

Next Week:

Youth Group Schedule will resume on the following week, Sunday, March 9 with our meeting being at 6:00-7:30.

Upcoming Dates to Mark:

Youth Group Lock-In: Friday April 4 at 6:00

Youth Sunday: May 4

Sing Forth The Kingdom: June 1

Moving Up Sunday: June 15

I will keep you up to date as more things are added here.

Thanks again for your support of the program and your continued to commitment to work alongside me and the rest of the congregation to care well for these children of God.

In Peace,

Jordan

All the kids have been asking when the lock-in is going to be scheduled.  I have added it to the church calendar on Friday, April 4.  Please let me know if there is any reason why we should change that date.

Acolyte Meeting:

I would like to have the whol youth group together for an Acolyte Training and Scheduling Session on Sunday, April 27.  This is the first Sunday after Easter and the first Sunday that I don't have anything immediately following Worship.  We will meet with all the kids in the church and train them on acolyte duties, why its important, what its significance is to worship, and then with you parents present, we will schedule the remainder of Acolyte for the 2014 season.  Please add this date to your family calendar and be sure to be with us for that.

I think thats all for this week.  Please remember to keep me in the loop if your child is not going to be with us on Sunday Evenings.

Thanks!

In Peace,

Jordan
